High-Risk Lung Cancer Screening
To maximize effective, long-term treatment, lung cancer must be diagnosed in its earliest stages. This requires the use of advanced techniques, performed by experienced specialists.
Montefiore Einstein Center for Cancer Care offers a high-risk lung cancer screening program that uses low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) scans to help detect the disease at its earliest, most treatable stage. The use of annual low-dose CT scans for early detection of lung cancer is the first screening method proven to reduce mortality due to lung cancer, compared with the standard chest x-ray.
Montefiore's program, which is coordinated by a team of experts from its Department of Radiology, Division of Pulmonary Medicine, Department of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery and the Center for Cancer Care, is the first of its kind in the Bronx, where the smoking rate is the second highest among New York City's five boroughs, at 16.2 percent, according to the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. The program is offered to individuals who meet the criteria established in the landmark National Lung Screening Trial sponsored by the National Cancer Institute. Eligible patients must be:
- Between ages 55-74
- Cannot have had a chest CT scan in the previous year
- Must be current or former smokers who quit within the last 15 years
- Must have smoked a minimum of 30 "pack years" – for example-one pack a day for 30 years, two packs a day for 15 years etc.
Patients are excluded if they had a prior cancer within 5 years or were ever previously diagnosed with lung cancer. Ask your doctor if you are a candidate for LDCT lung cancer screening.
