The tricuspid heart valve separates the right atrium from the right ventricle and allows deoxygenated blood to flow between them. Once blood has cycled through the body, it is returned to the right atrium, which is located on the right side of the heart. When the right atrium is full, the tricuspid heart valve opens to allow the deoxygenated blood to flow into the right ventricle. The right ventricle then fills with the deoxygenated blood. As pressure changes in the right atrium and right ventricle, the tricuspid heart valve closes. The right ventricle then contracts and pumps the deoxygenated blood through the pulmonary valve and into the lungs, where the blood is oxygenated.
